The Ox and the Frog

Μια φορά ένα βόδι πήγε στη
λίμνη που ήταν γεμάτη
καλαμιές να πιει νερό. Καθώς
όμως έπεσε με φορά μέσα στο
νερό, συνέθλιψε καταλάθος
ένα βάτραχο μέσα στη λάσπη.
Translate
An ox came down to a reedy pool to drink water. As he splashed
heavily into the water, he crushed a young frog into the mud.
Ο μεγαλύτερος αδερφός έχασε τον μικρό του αδερφό-βάτραχο. Άρχισε να ψάχνει τον μικρό του αδερφό και ρώτησε τα υπόλοιπα
βατραχάκια αν γνώριζαν που ήταν.
Translate
The older brother of the frog soon missed his little brother. He began looking for the little brother and asked the other frogs in the pool if they had seen him.
«Ένα τεράστιο τέρας», είπε ένα από τα βατραχάκια,
«τσαλαπάτησε τον μικρό σου αδελφό με τα τεράστια πόδια του! »
Translate
"A great big monster," said one of them, "stepped on your little
brother with one of his huge feet!"
«Ήταν όντως τόσο μεγάλος;» Είπε το μεγαλύτερο βατραχάκι, φουσκώνοντας τα πνευμόνια του γεμάτα αέρα. «Ήταν μεγάλος
όσο κι εγώ τώρα;» ξαναρώτησε.
Translate
"Big, was he?" asked the older brother, puffing himself up. "Was he as
big as this?"
«Ο ο ο, πολύ μεγαλύτερος» κλαψούρισαν όλα τα βατραχάκια
μαζί. Ο βάτραχος φούσκωσε ακόμα πιο πολύ.
Translate
"Oh, much bigger!" they cried. The frog puffed up even more.
«Δεν είναι δυνατόν το τέρας να ήταν μεγαλύτερο από μένα τώρα»
είπε. Αλλά όλα τα βατραχάκια συμφώνησαν ότι το τέρας ήταν
πολύ, πολύ μεγαλύτερο. Ο βάτραχος συνέχιζε να φουσκώνει
και να ξανά φουσκώνει και να φουσκώνει ακόμα πιο πολύ, και
στο τέλος έσκασε από το πολύ φούσκωμα.
Μην επιχειρείτε το αδύνατο.
Translate
"He could not have been bigger than me right this moment," he
said. But the little frogs all declared that the monster was much,
much bigger. The older frog kept puffing himself up more and
more until, all at once, he burst.
Do not attempt the impossible.
